There is Sunshine 320 days of the year, the wonderful blue Mediterranean, a healthier way of living with less stress and I could go on.....

Spain is one of the largest exporters of Wine behind France and Italy. Spain also produces Sherry and Brandy, some 61% of vineyards produces white grapes but the majority of wine production concerns Red Wine.

Quality wine regions in Spain are called Denominaciones de origen.  For example starting with the best wines,

Vino de Pago

Wine regions that claim the highest standard which generally are individual estates with international reputation.  At present there are just 11 regions, 8 in Castilla La Mancha and 3 in Navarra

Denominacion de Origen Calificada..these wines have a record of continuous quality....at the moment Rioja and Priorat

Denominacion de Origen...There are currently 66 wine regions with this status, producing high quality wine.

Vino de la Tierra. These have no EU recognition but there are 46 Spanish regions producing them.

Vino de la Mesa. These grapes are bulk grown and drawn from a wide variety of regions. Therefore there can be no vintage or area designations on the label apart from Produce of Spain, production is actually falling as visitors and locals prefer to spend a little bit more and enjoy their wine.

Although in nearly all the wine regions are confined to specific areas, some of the top producers in more than one autonomous locality ie Cava and Rioja.

In contrast Vinos de Pago have a strict location which is very exact, often pinpointing particular plots of land and only allowing wines produced in that area.
