Since its opening in 2011, Alicante–Elche Miguel Hernández Airport has experienced extraordinary growth, becoming one of Spain’s busiest international gateways. This rapid increase has now prompted a major development decision: last week, AENA’s Board of Directors officially approved a large-scale terminal expansion project scheduled for 2027–2031, with an estimated investment of €31 billion.
The expansion plan includes the construction of new commercial areas, upgrades to security zones, and the creation of a dedicated VIP lounge for non-Schengen passengers. These improvements aim to increase comfort, efficiency, and capacity as demand continues to surge year after year.
Traffic figures underline why this investment is essential. In 2024 alone, the airport handled an impressive 18,388,543 passengers, reflecting its vital role in both tourism and regional mobility. Cargo operations also saw significant activity, with 4,248 tonnes of goods moving through the airport’s logistics area.
The momentum has continued into 2025. Between January and September, Alicante Airport welcomed 15,317,278 passengers, an 8.7% increase compared to the same period the previous year. July 2025 set a historic milestone: the airport processed 2,106,991 passengers in a single month, marking the first time it surpassed the 2-million threshold monthly.
This intense growth is not only due to the increasing number of tourists arriving on the Costa Blanca each year. A significant part of the airport’s success is linked to the rising number of international residents choosing to settle in the region. More and more people from around the world are purchasing homes in Alicante and the surrounding coastal areas, drawn by the climate, lifestyle, and natural beauty of this unique Mediterranean landscape.
Their presence contributes to both tourism and long-term development, reinforcing the Costa Blanca as one of Spain’s most desirable destinations for living, investment, and leisure.
